So, your business has grown and now you are looking to outsource your bookkeeping to a professional. There are a couple of things you need to consider when finding the right bookkeeper for you and your business.
We’ve put together a quick checklist to ask any bookkeeper you will work with.
Are they a certified bookkeeper and BAS Agent? If you are going to have an external agent work on your books they MUST be registered, especially if they are lodging your BAS. Clients come to us in need of massive cleanups. These clients had previously hired a virtual assistant or untrained administrator to handle their books. Getting things cleans up and making sure the client remains compliant with the ATO can cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
Check whether your new bookkeeper knows how to use software such as MYOB, Xero, AccountRight. Even more importantly do they have a license to the software you use? Always make sure that you have your own subscription to keep your own records and you can invite your bookkeeper in as a user.
Have you signed a confidentiality agreement? Your bookkeeper will be a big asset to your business and know a lot of confidential information. In order to keep the information confidential at the end of the relationship, make sure to have it in writing.
Are your processes with your bookkeeper manual? Cloud accounting has a world of apps and add-ons developed for every industry to help streamline processes such as data entry, quoting, purchases, sales invoices and even ordering or staffing! Each system you use should speak to one another and the right professional can set this all up for you that the process is seamless.
5. Attention to all the fine details
Something as little as skimming through or coding to the wrong account can influence your business decisions and give you an inaccurate snapshot of your business. Something may have been coded to the wrong department, for example. It might look like an area of your business isn’t making profits when it was simply a mistake in getting the final numbers and not paying attention to the finer details.
